Frisian forests, dunes, water landscapes and four national parks invite you to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. Friesland is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding, but above all the water country is characterised by the wet element. With endless kilometres of coastline and countless boat routes, including the famous Eleven Cities Tour, excursions on the water are a must. Those who can't get enough of the North Sea will find their happiness at a campsite with a pool in Friesland.

Top tips

  • The Swimfun adventure pool is located in the south-west of Joure: water slides, white water canyon and wave pool as well as a sports pool, aquadisco and paddling area provide fun. The whirlpools and wellness area with sauna and solarium offer peace and relaxation.
  • Perhaps the most beautiful windmill motifs can be found in the small, north-eastern town of Dokkum. As picturesque as they are lofty, the Dokkum windmills overlook the canals of the old town from the medieval town fortifications, which also boasts architectural monuments and attractive shopping streets.
  • In Friesland, there is also an extraordinary amount to see at night: A low light emission gives the region the best conditions to admire the starry sky and the Milky Way. Nocturnal boat and hiking tours with star guides are available in the fens of De Alde Feanen and in the Lauwersmeer and Terschelling light reserves.

Activities and excursions

As cosy as it is at a campsite with a pool in Friesland, the surrounding area is also tempting for exciting activities.

Explore the national parks

Four national parks in Friesland offer contrasting nature experiences. The freshwater landscapes of the Lauwersmeer on the North Sea coast are home to numerous bird species that thrive among young forests, open water, reeds and orchid fields. The Schiermonnikoog Island National Park is just three quarters of an hour's ferry ride away for lovers of polder, dune and mudflat landscapes, while inland, the Drents-Friese Wold, the second largest forest area in the Netherlands, is home to a butterfly reserve and Scottish Highland cattle. Near Leeuwarden, the fairytale-like fen landscape of De Alde Feanen National Park welcomes visitors among birds, water lilies and sparkling waters.

Visit charming towns

The popular Elfstedentocht, or Eleven Towns Tour, is 200 kilometres long on water and 50 kilometres longer on land. The towns are also ideal for short trips and hours of fun on foot, by bike, motorbike or boat. Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland with a population of 110,000, was the European Capital of Culture in 2018. The canal town impresses with its elegance and numerous historical sights, while the south-western town of Sneek invites you to visit its colourful town centre, rococo town hall and medieval water gate, and next door in IJlst, where local arts and crafts are on display. Franeker in the south-west has a picturesque old town centre and the world's oldest functioning planetarium. Things get maritime in the lively harbour town of Harlingen, gateway to the mudflats and home to the artistic Harlinger tiles.

Experience Frisian water

The water network of the Frisian Lake District, unique in Europe, runs through the entire region from the North Sea to the IJsselmeer with countless canals, moats, canals and rivers. Whether in a hired sloop through Leeuwarden, on a sailing trip on a traditional skûtsje, on excursion boats from town to town or along the coast - fun and entertainment on and around the water are on offer everywhere. Those who want to get active themselves while camping with a pool in Friesland have the opportunity to surf, kiteboard, wakeboard and water ski on the beaches of the coast and lakes as well as in outdoor and adventure pools. Stand-up paddle tours on the waters of the picturesque Elfstadteroute are particularly attractive.

Events

Tradition and great festival spectacles in little Friesland.

May - June

  • Oranjewoud Festival: Unusual places and locations around Heerenveen are transformed into classical music concert halls of a special kind. Top musicians from all over Europe give concerts from early morning until midnight in gardens, on country estates and even in an underground bunker. The atmosphere is informal and admission is free.

August

  • Sneekweek: Europe's largest inland water sailing event and a colourful programme invite you to Sneek. The motto is: "Honour during the day, atmosphere in the evening". The sailing competitions are embedded in festive events: a street fair and a funfair make for a huge fun festival.

September

  • Admiraliteitsdagen: multi-day maritime festival with music, theatre and harbour fun in Dokkum. Every year on the first weekend in September, history and culture, conviviality and hospitality remind us that Dokkum was the first location of the Frisian Admiralty in 1596.
