From Berlin , the A24, B96 and A11 motorways lead north towards the Mecklenburg Lake District. From Rostock , it is only a 100 km drive. From the west or north-west, you can use the A20 or A24** motorways. Both motorways are also available from Hamburg. The city on the Elbe is around 200 km from the Mecklenburg Lake District.
The cuisine of the Mecklenburg Lake District is mainly characterised by the region's lakes and rivers. Fish such as trout, carp and pike are at the top of the region's menus. These delicacies are served freshly fried with a cream and dill sauce and boiled potatoes. You can also buy tender cooked eels in the smokehouses of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
Another delicacy is Mecklenburg rib roast, which is made from pork belly meat. It is baked in the oven with sweet and sour ingredients such as prunes, apples, rusks and cinnamon. A red fruit jelly made from regional wild berries and other fruits tastes delicious for dessert.

Waren is by far the best-known spa town in the Mecklenburg Lake District and is located directly on the banks of Germany's second largest body of water, the Müritz. The lake is a popular destination for extended sailing and rowing tours, especially in summer. Passenger shipping also offers good excursion options. In the town centre, you can also admire the Nordic brick architecture and some beautiful half-timbered buildings.
Located in southern Mecklenburg, the popular excursion destination of Plau am See forms the western gateway to the Mecklenburg Lake District. The municipality with its historic old town is also a recognised climatic health resort where you can relax and unwind. There are still some remains of the medieval town fortifications, including the castle tower from the middle of the 15th century.
The climatic health resort of Krakow with its attractive lakeside promenade is located directly on Lake Krakow. The Old Synagogue, one of the few buildings of its kind in Nordic brick architecture, is worth a visit. From the observation tower on the Jörnberg you have a wonderful view over the wide lake landscape in the surrounding area.
The Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz resided in the idyllic little town of Mirow in the 18th century. A small bridge takes you from the magnificent castle island to the romantic island of love, where the tomb of the last prince is located.
The camping season in the Mecklenburg Lake District usually begins in May, when temperatures rise to around 18 degrees Celsius and offer good opportunities for extensive hikes and cycle tours. From June to around the beginning of September, temperatures reach up to 22 degrees Celsius and the water is also up to 18 degrees Celsius. In addition to swimming, you can also go sailing and enjoy other water sports during this period. In autumn, the best way to experience the beautiful foliage colours is on long walks through the forest.
