Lush green forests, extensive floodplain landscapes and the characteristic canals and branches of the Spree make the Spreewald a marvellous destination for nature lovers. The flat paths in the middle of the region, which is rural in many places, are particularly suitable for long excursions by bike. But a trip on a rustic boat along the extensive waterways is also an absolute must.

Located south-east of Berlin, the Spreewald is a paradise for nature-loving campers. Countless side arms of the Spree run through a picturesque, densely wooded floodplain and moorland landscape: the perfect area for extended tours by canoe or paddle boat. Deep in the forest are secluded Sorbian farms and fish farms that can only be reached by water. The many bathing opportunities and family-friendly campsites by the lake make the Spreewald a dream region for a relaxing holiday with a large portion of bathing fun, especially in summer.
The Spreewald is located around 80 kilometres from Berlin in south-eastern Brandenburg. The "land of cucumbers and canals" is known for its unique network of river arms and canals, which was created over centuries by the local Sorbian population and has since earned the region UNESCO biosphere reserve status. The Spreewald is a popular destination for campers thanks to its unique mix of bathing fun, nature experience and comfort. Many campsites in the Spreewald are located directly on the Spree or on one of the region's many bathing lakes, such as Schwielowsee, Briesensee near Lübben or Molchowsee in the west of the Spreewald. So there are plenty of opportunities for swimming. Water sports are not neglected when camping in the Spreewald either: there are hire stations and boat hire centres near the campsites. Here, campers can hire paddle boats, kayaks or canoes and set off on a canoeing adventure on the Spree. The main town in the region is Lübbenau, which is also known as the gateway to the Spreewald. Tours to the region's famous places start from here. Boat trips to the rustic farms where the famous Spreewald gherkins are produced are particularly popular. Dog owners don't have to leave their four-legged companions at home on a camping holiday in the Spreewald. The region is known for its numerous dog-friendly campsites. The best time to visit is in summer, but it is advisable to book pitches well in advance during the high season.
The campsites on offer range from secluded nature campsites by the lake to upmarket holiday resorts for families. In addition to regular pitches, rental accommodation, mobile homes or holiday flats are often offered. Guests with motorhomes can use the motorhome park in Lübbenau and explore the Spreewald from there.
This picturesque campsite is located a few minutes outside of Lübbenau between two branches of the Spree right next to the pretty castle park. The old town of Lübbenau is just a stone's throw away. Thanks to the almost perfect transport connections and the beautiful location, the site is one of the most popular campsites in the region. Boat hire is available directly on site and dogs are allowed.
The Eurocamp Spreewaldtor borders the biosphere reserve to the west and is characterised by its great location on Lake Groß Leuthen. Bathing holidaymakers can look forward to more than just a great swimming lake - there is also a swimming pool on site. If you don't have a bike, you can hire one on site. Cyclists can set off directly from the campsite and cycle along the famous "Gurkenweg" to Schlepzig or Lübben.
This idyllically situated holiday park on a small peninsula in Lake Neuendorf is a dream for nature lovers. In the middle of nature but still easily accessible, the site is the perfect setting for a holiday in the countryside. In addition to bathers, the site is particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts. On-site activities include surfing, sailing and canoeing. Various boats can be hired from the on-site boat hire centre and you can set off straight away.
The charming floodplain landscape of the Spreewald is home to numerous pretty villages that are perfect destinations for day trips or starting points for boat tours in this region characterised by water. Lübbenau in particular, the "capital of the Spreewald", is a great place to get to know the Spreewald on the waterways. Lübben with its picturesque castle is also worth a visit. Burg is also a popular place for wellness holidaymakers and is known nationwide for its Spreewald thermal baths.
Lübbenau is known as the "gateway to the Spreewald" and is the centre of the region with a population of around 17,000. The town is easily accessible and offers a perfect starting point for exploring the Spreewald. From the harbour, guests can reach all the main sights by boat or canoe. In the district of Lehde, the open-air museum provides information about the traditional life of the Sorbs. The quaint Wotschofska restaurant and the castle are also impressive.
In addition to its proximity to the beautiful woodlands and canals of the Upper Spreewald, the state-recognised spa town of Burg is known above all for its excellent healing springs. The regional spring water is used in the local Spreewaldtherme spa and provides bathers with visibly revitalised skin. The centre also offers massages, saunas and many other wellness treatments. A cultural highlight is the Heimatstube in a thatched log cabin.
The state-recognised resort of Lübben offers holidaymakers a good starting point for rowing and barge tours on the Spree canals. As a rule, the smaller barges are propelled with a pole or punt. One of Lübben's best-known attractions is the castle, situated on an idyllic castle island. The building houses the town and regional museum with many interesting exhibits about the region. In summer, residents and guests can look forward to numerous events such as the Nights of Light and the Harbour Festival.
If you are travelling with your own motorhome and still have a little time to spare, you can set off from the Spreewald on a longer tour through eastern Germany. A beautiful route is the northern section of the German Avenue Road, which runs for around 290 kilometres from Rheinsberg in Brandenburg to Cape Arkona on Rügen. The Mecklenburg Lake District in particular is a delight for nature lovers: sparkling lakes alternate with picturesque towns such as Waren an der Müritz. One highlight is the Müritz National Park with its endless forests and vast moorland landscapes. Finally, the beautiful sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea await as a reward - a real dream tour that we warmly recommend to all campers!
