As one of the sunniest regions in the Netherlands, Zeeland is predestined for a varied beach holiday with your dog. On the coast of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, kilometres of sandy beaches beckon, where pets are very welcome. Two- and four-legged friends can roam the dunes and forests on well-maintained paths along the coast and in the unspoilt hinterland.
Dog owners are guaranteed to find a quiet spot on the endless sandy beaches near Renesse. Active holidaymakers can explore the fascinating holiday region on foot or by bike.
The numerous dog beaches on Zeeland's coast prove that the Netherlands has a big heart for animals. In the pet-friendly municipality of Renesse, there are clear rules on when dogs can run free on the beach. From 1 May to 1 October, four-legged friends are allowed to run around on the beach off the lead before 10 am or after 7 pm. Along the 17-kilometre stretch of coast towards Westenschouwen, there are beautiful stretches of unspoilt nature that are less frequented and ideal for playing with your four-legged friend. If you get hungry in between, you can stop off at the cosy beach pavilions and restaurants, while holidaymakers who want to cook their own dinner when camping with their dog in Renesse can cast a line. The south beach of the seaside resort is one of the most popular fishing spots in the region. Here you can go out to a sandbank where sea fish such as cod and mackerel can be found. No licence is required to fish. The campsite operators are happy to provide information about the regulations for anglers on the North Sea coast.
Away from the beaches, Renesse also scores with its beautiful nature. Holidaymakers can reach Zeeland's largest forest in Westenschouven in just 10 minutes. Sand as far as the eye can see awaits active holidaymakers on the 12 km long Tour Door de duinen van Renesse. You pass the Verklikkerduinen, which are several 100 metres wide. Rare plants such as sea thistle and sea fennel grow between the sometimes quite steep sand formations. The Netherlands is known throughout the world as a great cycling nation. If you want to explore the beautiful dune landscape together with your dog on extended tours, hire a bike from one of the hire stations. Worthwhile destinations include the Zuidkust van Schouwen nature reserve and the Vroongronden between Renesse and Burgh-Haamstede.
Traditional events such as King's Day and lively festivals await holidaymakers in Renesse, especially during the warmer months of the year.
