The island of Ameland, which is around 27 kilometres long, presents itself to families as an oversized sandpit. Wide, fine sandy beaches and the gently sloping shore offer the youngest children a paradise for playing. The campsites on Ameland are also ideal starting points for mudflat walks or a boat trip out to sea to watch the seals. Dog owners can enjoy the wonderful nature while camping on Ameland together with their four-legged friend.
Cultural and beach holidays can be perfectly combined when camping on Ameland in Hollum. The listed centre and the picturesque red and white lighthouse are within easy reach of the campsites. From the campsites in the south near Ballum, beer lovers can visit the island brewery and families can enjoy an indoor play centre.
The campsites in the north are surrounded by a fascinating dune landscape. The 24 metre high De Oerder Blinkert dune is one of the most popular excursion destinations. The picturesque village of Nes also has beautiful campsites. Here you are close to the ferry harbour and the historic captain's houses as well as the pedestrian zone with numerous shopping opportunities.
Holidaymakers travelling with a motorhome or tent can choose between four different campsites on Ameland: Camping Duinoord, Roosdunen near Ballum, de Kiekduun and Vakantiepark Klein Vaarwater. They are all located directly in the dune area or on the North Sea beach, so swimming fun is always just a few minutes' walk away.
The island's four campsites are strategically located for exploring the beautiful North Sea beach. Walking along a beautiful dune path and letting your gaze wander over the sea is a relatively quick way to forget everyday life.
The very natural meadow area in the dunes is generously laid out with pitches for motorhomes and caravans. In addition to the permanent pitches, there is also a sufficient number for guests of the site. Tents, folding caravans or tent trailers can be parked in a separate area a little further inland on the site. Particularly popular in Duinoord are the rental accommodations, which have been designed as a tent house, among other things. The entertainment team ensures that both children and adults have a great time.
Camping de Roosdunen in the dune area near Ballum is a little more tranquil. With numerous permanent pitches, seasonal guests are somewhat outnumbered. However, there is an extensive leisure programme on offer. Riding lessons, mini golf, a table tennis table and bike hire ensure that campers get plenty of exercise. A mini-market and a snack bar also cater for culinary needs at Camping de Roosdunen.
Camping De Kiekduun is the smallest site on the island, but has a special charm in the middle of the dune fields. A paddling pool, a football pitch and beach volleyball encourage the little ones in particular to socialise intensively on the campsite. Camping De Kiekduun is particularly appreciated by guests for its family camping.
Temperatures on Ameland are moderate all year round. In midsummer, the maximum average temperatures reach 21 degrees Celsius, while temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius are rarely reached. In July and August, the North Sea water warms up to around 20 degrees Celsius and offers refreshment on hot days.
In April, just in time for the opening of the season at many campsites, temperatures rise to more than 10 degrees Celsius. With six to seven hours of sunshine a day, the friendly weather prevails from May to August. However, you are not immune to showers when camping on Ameland, even in summer it rains about 11 days a month.
