Camping on Krk is a camping holiday on the sunny island of Croatia. The largest island in the Adriatic offers secluded bays, steep cliffs, well-preserved old towns and many water sports opportunities. No wonder the campsites on Krk are so popular. The region is also ideal for naturists among campers, as there are several campsites in Istria that offer nude camping.

With over 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, the largest island in the northern Adriatic attracts campers, sports enthusiasts and nudists alike. Camping on Krk mainly takes place in the south-west of the island. Here you will find beautiful campsites right by the sea or close to secluded bays and pebble beaches.

Most of the well-organised and spacious campsites on Krk are located in the south of the island near the coast. These sites are very popular with families who prefer a little more comfort. Campers can also arrive without their own tent or caravan. Some 5-star campsites on Krk even offer small bungalows with a view of the Adriatic.

Thanks to the gently sloping beaches with low surf, the holiday island is particularly suitable for families with children. Family-friendly campsites with entertainment programmes, pools, children's pools and playgrounds are a matter of course on Krk. There is also a wide range of leisure activities, sports fields and, in many places, a private beach on site.

The condition of the facilities is excellent. The pitches generally have fresh water and electricity connections. In addition to pitches for caravans and motorhomes, rental caravans, mobile homes and holiday flats are often available to rent. Some pitches also offer luxurious glamping tents and other unusual accommodation options.

For water sports enthusiasts who have arrived without equipment and would like to hire their gear from a surfing or sailing school, the campsites near the larger holiday resorts are ideal. There are beautiful sandy and pebble beaches off Baška, which are popular with surfers and kiters.

Camping with a dog on Krk

Camping with dogs is very popular on Krk. It is therefore no problem to bring a dog to most campsites. Many beaches have specially designated areas for dogs and dog beaches. The interior of the island and inland areas of Krk also offer plenty of forests and opportunities for dogs to run around.

Gastronomic highlights for campers

There are many influences from neighbouring countries in the local cuisine. Austrian, Hungarian and Ottoman-Turkish dishes characterise Croatian cuisine. However, the classic Wiener Schnitzel with lemon and chips is also on the menu in the restaurants. The proximity to Italy is also noticeable: pasta and pizza are also on offer in the holiday restaurants and snack bars on the beach.

Strongly flavoured grilled meat, such as raznjici and cevapcici, is served in every restaurant. In the villages and markets, you can try lamb and suckling pig on the spit, and fish and calamari are served on the grill on the coast. Side dishes include salads, ajvar and onion rings as well as seasoned rice and chips. The restaurants in the holiday resorts also offer many international dishes in addition to the typical Croatian grilled dishes.

Locally grown wine from Dalmatia, Kvarner Bay or Istria is a favourite drink in Croatia. Red wine is mainly served in carafes and usually chilled. The local beer is called pivo and is not quite as bitter as German beer. The mild and refreshing barley juice is a favourite toast when camping on Krk and is the start of many a convivial evening.

Favourite destinations on Krk

In addition to the more well-known holiday resorts, which are well frequented in summer, Krk offers a total of 70 small villages, fishing villages and towns. While the sleepy mountain villages in the hinterland are enchanting, the old fishing villages, fortresses and medieval town centres along the coast are impressive.

Krk

Krk is the largest town on the island of the same name and is one of the oldest settlements in the region. The spa and seaside resort offers harbour facilities worth seeing and a picturesque medieval centre. At the centre of the town are the monastery quarter with St. Mary's Cathedral and a castle built by the Frankopans in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Baška

The second largest coastal town is Baška. Despite its size, it is worth exploring this nostalgic little town on foot. Families with children like to visit the Baška Aquarium, the Folk Museum or the stalactite cave. The bay of Baška is particularly popular with campers thanks to its kilometre-long sand and shingle beach.

Njivice

The lively seaside paradise in the north-west of the island was once a fishing and farming village. Thanks to its manageable size, the alleyways and markets of Njivice are perfect for a stroll. In addition to small souvenir shops, there are many ice cream parlours and restaurants. The waterfront promenade by the harbour is lively and colourful in the evening. Street artists, artisans and musicians meet here.

Best time to travel for a camping holiday on Krk

Krk, the largest town on the island, is not only a popular seaside resort, but also an excellent climatic health resort. As early as the beginning of May, the summer temperatures attract visitors to Krk for a camping holiday. The warm air from the Adriatic Sea is considered energising on the island.

Even in spring, holidaymakers can look forward to water temperatures of up to 19 degrees in the sea. From summer onwards, bathing temperatures rise to a pleasant 24 degrees. Many campers therefore spend hours splashing around in and on the water. The long, balmy evenings of the Croatian summer tempt many a party night.
