If you are looking for a beautiful campsite by the water, you can stay at Lake Constance in the Allgäu, for example. Germany's largest inland body of water is characterised by beautiful beaches and a wide range of leisure activities. Somewhat more secluded, the Forggensee, the Rottachsee and the Große Alpsee are options for spending the night on one of the shores against a fantastic mountain backdrop.

Destinations

The Bavarian section of Lake Constance is comparatively narrow, but its great beaches guarantee an unforgettable and varied time in the Allgäu. Camping by the lake is great fun here, especially around Lindau. Here you can not only swim, but also take a boat trip across the water. Kitesurfing and surfing are also exciting activities. Park Camping Lindau is a recommended campsite by the lake in the Allgäu and receives particularly high ratings from its customers. Facilities include a mooring area for boats, a beach volleyball court and a golf course. Holidaymakers can also take part in a sports programme.

In Immenstadt in the Allgäu region, the Große Alpsee is a popular destination for camping holidaymakers. The combination of bathing and rowing paradise and hiking terrain is remarkable. You can go hiking high up in the Allgäu slopes around the lake. The Buchenegg waterfalls are a beautiful excursion destination. Alpsee Camping, a high-quality campsite in Immenstadt, is an excellent place to relax. The site is also ideal for dog owners. There is even a separate shower for four-legged friends. If you feel like it, you can hire bikes and e-bikes.

Lake Forggensee in the Ostallgäu region is a popular destination for camping fans. Surrounded by impressive granite rocks, holidaymakers spend their time here at one of Germany's largest reservoirs. The famous Neuschwanstein Castle is just a few kilometres away.

Top tips

  • The playfully designed Neuschwanstein Castle is well worth a visit with children. Once built by the fairytale king Ludwig II, it is the epitome of a magnificent palace complex and transports young guests in particular to a romanticised Middle Ages of princesses and knights.
  • One of the most famous mountains in the Allgäu is the Nebelhorn, which is best conquered by cable car. From an altitude of around 2,224 metres, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Alps and the valleys of Bavaria. In rustic mountain huts, hikers can fortify themselves with hearty cuisine - for example with crusty bread with mountain cheese and air-dried ham. In winter, the Nebelhorn is a top ski resort.

Activities and excursions in the Allgäu

When camping by the lake in the Allgäu, holidaymakers can indulge in water sports or explore the picturesque region between fertile valleys and Alpine peaks while cycling and hiking.

Swimming

The shores of Forggensee, Grosser Alpsee and Bodensee are perfect for a swimming holiday with camping in the Allgäu. Especially in summer, the water is pleasantly refreshing and tempts you to take a dip. Many of the campsites are located directly on the beach.

Rowing

The mountain lakes in particular are best discovered by rowing. From the water, you can enjoy marvellous views of the majestic rock faces and snow-capped mountain peaks.

Sailing

Lake Constance is particularly suitable for a sailing trip. Lindau offers a whole range of sailing courses and guided trips. If you already have a licence, you can also hire a boat and discover the waters individually.

Hiking

Lush alpine pastures and imposing peaks tempt you to go hiking in the Allgäu. From the lakes, you can head high up to viewing plateaus at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres above sea level. Elevations such as the Daumengruppe and the Nagelfluhkette offer unique views. In spring, hikers can also experience the blossoming of the meadows on the mountain slopes.

Cycling

The shores of the numerous lakes in the Allgäu Alps are ideal for cycling tours. The elevation profile is comparatively flat if you follow the course of the shore. Accordingly, these routes are also easy to manage with children or the family. Lake Constance is also good terrain for cycling.

Road trips to castle ruins and natural wonders

Many secrets await travellers on excursions. One interesting destination, for example, is the ruins of Falkenstein Castle in the eastern Allgäu. Natural sights such as the Lech Falls near Füssen are also impressive. Well-known holiday routes such as the German Alpine Road and the Upper Swabian Baroque Road can be used for motorhome tours.

The Allgäu and its events

The Allgäu offers a colourful spectrum of great events throughout the year.

February - March

  • Fasnet: In many places in the Allgäu, the fools parade through the streets in spring. The Alemannic-Swabian carnival is one of the highlights of the year.

June

  • International Wolfegg Concerts: On the last weekend in June, guests at the Wolfegg Residence can look forward to concerts by international musicians.

July

  • Tänzelfest: The children of Kaufbeuren re-enact the history of their town at a historical festival. The event is accompanied by parades and music.
  • Seenachtsfest: Fireworks, dancing, music and good food are the main attractions of the Seenachtsfest on the Großer Alpsee.

September

  • Almabtrieb: Every September, the cows are driven down from the mountain pastures in the mountain villages of the Allgäu. The herds of cattle return to their stables decorated and with the ringing of bells.
