The picturesque village of Oberstdorf in the Allgäu with its old farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries is located on the border with Austria and is surrounded on all sides by the mighty peaks of the Allgäu Alps. Kempten

With 67,000 inhabitants, the former Roman town of Kempten is the largest city in the Allgäu and a popular starting point for exploring the region. The city's sights include the magnificent state rooms of the residence, the underground Erasmus Chapel and the excavations in the Cambodunum Archaeological Park. Kempten's Hofgarten is a wonderful place for a stroll, and the city is also a popular place for shopping. The CamboMare adventure pool offers swimming fun. Cyclists can explore the surrounding area on the Iller cycle path and the Allgäu cycle path.

Sonthofen

The international Alpine Town of the Year 2005 is the southernmost town in Germany and is located directly in front of the Allgäu High Alps nature reserve. From the town centre with its lively pedestrian zone, you can reach unspoilt mountain scenery and popular excursion destinations such as the Hinanger waterfall or the Starzlachklamm gorge in just a few minutes. A real hit with families is the Burgberg animal paradise with a petting zoo and adjoining café. The cosy old town invites you to stroll around, and a visit to the southern districts of Altstädten and Hinang is also highly recommended.

Isny

The pretty little town of Isny in the Allgäu, one of the sunniest places in Germany, promises an almost Mediterranean flair. The former imperial town is located on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route and boasts numerous magnificent buildings and churches from the Baroque period. Isny is also a popular spa town with many wellness facilities and a beautiful spa park. The town is surrounded by a charming cultural landscape that invites you to take long walks, cycle tours and hikes, for example to the Rotmoos nature reserve and the neighbouring moorland areas.

Sights and excursion tips

  • Nebelhorn: Oberstdorf's local mountain is one of the most famous peaks in the Allgäu Alps and a popular destination for a hike. If you don't want to walk all the way, simply hop on the Nebelhorn cable car in Oberstdorf, which takes children, dogs and tired hikers up to an altitude of 2,200 metres.
  • Oberstdorfer ski jump: At 207 metres long, the Heini-Klopfer ski jump in Stillachtal is the largest ski jump in Germany and the third largest ski jump in the world. Here, visitors can experience the fascination of ski jumping up close - the views from the 70 metre high jump tower are breathtaking.
  • Breitach Gorge: The Breitach Gorge stretches from Oberstdorf Tiefenbach to the neighbouring Kleinwalsertal valley and is the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe. The impressive geotope of cascading mountain streams and winding caves is a wonderful hiking destination. A detour to the Walserschanz offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountain panorama.
  • Freibergsee: The shimmering green-blue Freibergsee is located just a few kilometres south of Oberstdorf and is a great destination for a swim. At 930 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest bathing lakes in Germany. Walks on the circular path around the lake are also very popular.
  • Illerursprung: The river Iller is formed by the confluence of the Trettach, Stillach and Breitach rivers at the so-called Illerursprung. The area is a popular hiking destination and can be reached from Oberstdorf on an easy circular hiking trail.
