The Croatian Adriatic coast in particular is a popular holiday destination for motorhome and camping fans. Here, holidaymakers can jump straight into the water from their accommodation and relax in the mild summer temperatures. Many regions, such as Kvarner Bay and Dalmatia, are also known as true sailing and surfing paradises. Guests can enjoy typical Croatian fish and grill cuisine in the konoba restaurants.

Destinations

One of the dream destinations for a holiday at a campsite on the beach in Croatia is the Istrian peninsula. To the north of the harbour town of Pula, there are beautiful stretches of coastline with fine pebbles. You can also discover the heritage of the Romans in the surrounding area, with Rovinj, Porec and Vrsar as recommended seaside resorts with camping facilities. The latter has, among other things, the Camping Orsera site, where holidaymakers can spend the night directly on the Adriatic Sea. The comparatively small, private site is located on a 900 metre long rocky coast with a paved terrace and seawater pool. The beach is 100 metres away on foot.

The island of Krk in the Kvarner Bay is one of Croatia's most famous holiday destinations. Even in the Yugoslavian era, holidaymakers flocked here to explore the forests in the hinterland and relax on the golden beaches. One well-known campsite on the island is the Jezevac complex right on the pebble beach. Guests can even book diving courses here. At the Krk Premium Camping Resort, holidaymakers stay in a 5-star ambience with an aqua park, gourmet cuisine and many other extras. One of Croatia's most famous cultural assets is the old town of Dubrovnik, which is surrounded by massive fortress walls. In addition to the architecture, the bathing bays are also worth seeing. Just a few minutes outside the centre, you can relax on a campsite on the beach in southern Croatia.

Top tips

  • Dubrovnik's old town centre fascinates with its narrow alleyways, where you can find one or two traditional konoba bars. Here, guests are served typical dishes such as the grilled minced meat rolls Ćevapčići, as well as fried fish and seafood dishes. The most famous sights in Dubrovnik include the baroque cathedral and the Stradun promenade.
  • Roman history can still be felt in Split today. In ancient times, an emperor of the mighty empire had the Diocletian's Palace, named after him, built. Sea food can be savoured on the Riva coastal promenade.
  • On the island of Rab in Kvarner Bay, it is worth visiting the town of the same name with its churches and other buildings from the Middle Ages.

Activities and excursions in Croatia

The Croatian coast is an exciting leisure paradise, suitable for activities ranging from diving and swimming to kitesurfing and surfing. Many holidaymakers simply relax on the beach and at the nearby campsites.

Swimming

The Croatian coast is world-famous for its fine pebble beaches. From Dalmatia and Dubrovnik in the south to the islands of the Kvarner Bay and the Istrian peninsula, the region offers top conditions for a relaxing beach holiday. The advantage is that many campsites are just a few steps away from the beach.

Sailing

Sailing fans from all over the world are drawn to the Croatian Adriatic. Sailing from island to island is particularly popular. Rugged landscapes can be explored. Moored in hidden bays, you have the opportunity to swim in peace and quiet. It is easy to book courses or hire a boat on site.

Kitesurfing and surfing

The beaches of Kvarner Bay are ideal for kitesurfing and surfing. Islands such as Krk and Rab offer ideal winds for hitting the waves. Some campsites even organise professional water sports schools for their guests or run them themselves.

Diving and snorkelling

The Adriatic is a good place to take your first steps in diving. A rich world of fish can be discovered on the mostly rocky seabed. Snorkels and diving goggles can be hired at the campsites so that you can take a look under the surface of the water even without a course.

Fishing and angling

Fishing is a popular activity on the Croatian coast. Deep-sea fishing is mainly possible as part of organised tours. Those who only want to fish can either sit on the coastal promenades or visit one of the lakes in the hinterland.

Hiking

One of the best hiking areas on the Croatian coast is the Biokovo mountain range on the Makarska Riviera. The hiking trails that lead high up into the mountains can be reached from the beach in no time at all. Hikers can enjoy fantastic views from the heights.

Festivals and events

Numerous events await holidaymakers in Croatia at any time of year.

June

  • Sibenik Children's Festival: The Dalmatian coastal town becomes the world centre for children for a fortnight in June. Events for young holidaymakers are organised throughout the city.

July

  • Pula Film Festival: Anyone interested in film-making in Croatia should definitely visit the Pula Film Festival in July.
  • Dubrovnik Summer Festival: In July, residents and visitors to Dubrovnik experience theatre shows and concerts on over 33 stages in the old town.

August

  • Street Art Festival Porec: On the west coast of Istria, the Street Art Festival with music, dance and jugglers ensures a good time in August.

September

  • Marco Polo Days: On the island of Korčula, the historic Battle of Korcula at the end of the 13th century is re-enacted with a spectacular show.
