Winter camping - a unique holiday experience

Winter camping is one of the experiences that camping fans particularly love. The surrounding winter landscape radiates an icy beauty that goes hand in hand with soothing tranquillity. The cosy warmth of the caravan or mobile home in the middle of it all, while nature is just a step away waiting to be explored. Outside, clouds of breath rise into the cold winter air as it flows fresh and revitalising into your lungs. All the senses perceive the details of this winter world and the anticipation of snow tours, fun on the piste and tobogganing fun awakens.

If you want to enjoy winter in all its splendour to the full and in close contact with nature, winter camping in the Dolomites is just right for you. The UNESCO World Heritage region of the Dolomites attracts visitors with its bizarre rock formations, impressive panoramas and some of the most beautiful ski areas in Europe. Rustic mountain huts invite you to stop off for a bite to eat and romantic carriage rides against the imposing mountain backdrop will stay in your memory for a long time. In the evening, the reddish glow of a campfire stands out against the snow-covered peaks and the sauna at the campsite invites you to take a relaxing break.

Popular winter campsites in the Dolomites region

On the edge of the Italian municipality of Dobbiaco, the dog-friendly Camping Olympia campsite offers spacious pitches in South Tyrol's Val Pusteria. Families with children, sports fans and those seeking relaxation will find ideal conditions for winter camping in the Dolomites here: Wellness fans can enjoy the sauna, steam bath and whirlpool. The nearest ski lift is just one kilometre away, and the ski areas of Plan de Corones and the Sesto Dolomites can be reached in 20 minutes on the free ski train. Away from the slopes, you can enjoy full moon tobogganing in Innerfelden and snow hikes. Against the backdrop of the Three Peaks, there is an extensive cross-country skiing area.

The dog-friendly Sesto Caravan Park in Val Pusteria, 5 kilometres outside the South Tyrolean municipality of Sesto, offers a panoramic view of the Sesto Dolomites. It combines the advantages of a campsite and a wellness oasis and is characterised by its wide range of offers for families and sports enthusiasts. A free ski bus transports campers to the nearby ski areas of Sesto: The nearest ski lift is just 900 metres away. In the evening, the floodlit Croda Rossa/Rotwand toboggan run beckons. Winter camping in the Dolomites is also great fun here thanks to the wide range of wellness facilities, the 14 saunas and the indoor pool designed with natural stone.

Activities and excursion destinations in the Dolomites

Winter camping in the Dolomites can be perfectly combined with excursions to the most beautiful sights in this impressive landscape. These include the Messner Mountain Museum and the Gherdëina Museum.

The Messner Mountain Museum

The Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) is a unique museum project in the magnificent mountain world of the Dolomites. The Italian extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner has chosen six locations for it: The MMM Firmiano forms the centre and is linked to the MMMs Dolomites, Juval, Ripa, Corones and Ortles. Each of the locations impresses with its individual architecture and is dedicated to a different thematic focus. Events such as evening hikes and lectures by Reinhold Messner round off these mountain experiences in the Dolomites.

The Gherdëina Museum in Ortisei in Val Gardena

Another excursion destination worth visiting is located in Ortisei in Val Gardena, the former home of the legendary alpinist and actor Luis Trenker. The Gherdëina Museum houses collections that provide an insight into Ladin culture as well as the fauna, flora and natural history of the Dolomites. Fossils such as an ichthyosaur vividly show what today's mountain world once looked like. Exhibitions on wood carving and wooden toys offer unique artefacts and a special area is dedicated to Luis Trenker.

Winter camping in the Dolomites offers the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the region from a special angle. Frozen mountain lakes glisten in the sun between snow-covered forests, picturesque villages present themselves with white snow caps and the peaks of the Dolomites tower above it all. Spend a winter camping holiday in the Dolomites as a winter sports enthusiast and nature lover.
